Direction over Speed

The world celebrates speed. We are encouraged to move faster, achieve more, and reach our goals as quickly as possible. Success is often measured by how rapidly we progress rather than whether we are heading in the right direction. Yet Scripture presents a different perspective. In God’s kingdom, direction is always more important than speed.

A person can run with great determination and still end up in the wrong place if they are travelling in the wrong direction. Likewise, a believer can be busy with good intentions yet miss God’s best by relying on personal wisdom instead of His leading.

This is captured in Proverbs 19:2. The proverb warns against haste without understanding. Enthusiasm alone is not enough. Running ahead without seeking God’s direction often leads to unnecessary frustration, disappointment, and detours.

God has never called His people simply to move quickly. He calls them to walk faithfully with Him. Progress that is rooted in God’s will is always more valuable than progress driven by impatience.

God’s Direction Is Found Through His Word and His Spirit

One of the greatest misconceptions is the fear that God is trying to hide His will, but Scripture reveals the opposite. God delights in leading His children. He is not reluctant to guide us; He desires that we know Him, trust Him, and walk in His ways.

Many people long for God to reveal specific details about the future. They ask questions such as:

  • Which career should I pursue?
  • Where should I live?
  • Who should I marry?
  • Which opportunity should I accept?

While Scripture does not always provide direct answers to every personal decision, it provides something even more valuable: principles that shape wise decisions and a relationship through which God directs His people.

This is why Proverbs 3:5-6 remains one of the clearest promises concerning divine guidance:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

Notice that the emphasis is not on discovering a hidden roadmap but on trusting the One who already knows the way.

God guides those who willingly submit their plans to Him.

His guidance comes through several means:

His Word

The Bible provides the foundation for every decision. God has already revealed His character, values, and will for holy living. We rarely struggle because Scripture lacks directive; more often, we struggle because we hesitate to follow what it already says.

The Holy Spirit

We believers are not left to navigate life alone. The Holy Spirit guides, convicts, and gives wisdom as we remain sensitive to His leading.

Prayer

Seeking God’s wisdom keeps our hearts aligned with His purposes instead of our own ambitions.

Obedience

Guidance often becomes clearer as we faithfully obey what God has already revealed.

Psalm 119:105 beautifully describes the role of Scripture; A lamp does not illuminate an entire journey at once. It provides enough light for the next step. Likewise, God often reveals His guidance progressively. Rather than showing us every detail of the future, He teaches us to depend on Him one step at a time.

Walking with God is therefore less about possessing complete knowledge and more about continual trust.

Following God’s Direction Requires Patience and Obedience

One of the greatest dangers in the Christian life is confusing activity with progress. It is entirely possible to be moving quickly while moving away from God’s purposes.

The early missionaries provide a remarkable example of this principle in Acts 16:6-7. Paul and his companions had carefully planned their missionary journey, yet the Holy Spirit prevented them from entering certain regions.

Instead of forcing their own agenda, they remained sensitive to God’s direction.

As doors closed, they continued praying, listening, and adjusting their course until God revealed the path that would ultimately take the gospel into Europe.

Had they stubbornly followed their original plans, their ministry would have remained confined to Asia Minor. Their willingness to pause, listen, and obey allowed God’s greater purposes to unfold.

This reminds us that closed doors are not always signs of failure. Sometimes they are evidence of God’s protection and guidance.

Isaiah offers similar encouragement in Isaiah 30:21. God promises to direct those who remain attentive to Him.

Walking in God’s direction requires several attitudes:

  • Humility: We acknowledge that God’s wisdom is greater than our own.
  • Patience: We resist the temptation to rush ahead simply because we dislike waiting.
  • Sensitivity to the Holy Spirit: We remain attentive to God’s leading rather than relying solely on personal reasoning.
  • Willingness to change course: Sometimes obedience requires adjusting our plans when God redirects us.

As we continue to walk closely with the Lord, our thinking becomes increasingly shaped by His truth. Paul explains that believers have “the mind of Christ” (1 Corinthians 2:16). As our minds are renewed through Scripture and the work of the Holy Spirit, we become better equipped to discern what pleases God.

This is why guidance is not merely about making correct decisions; it is about becoming the kind of people who naturally desire what God desires.

Proverbs 11:5 reinforces this. Righteous living prepares us to recognise God’s direction more clearly. As we pursue holiness and walk in obedience, our path becomes increasingly aligned with His purposes.

God’s guidance is not reserved for a select few. It is the gracious provision of a loving Father who delights in leading His children.

Conclusion

In a world that prizes speed, Scripture reminds us that direction matters far more than pace.

Running in the wrong direction will never produce the right results. No amount of determination can compensate for a path that leads away from God’s will. Yet those who trust the Lord, seek His wisdom, and remain sensitive to His Spirit can move forward with confidence, knowing that He faithfully directs their steps.

God is not hiding His will from His people. Through His Word, His Spirit, and a life of prayerful obedience, He continually provides the guidance needed for faithful living.

Sometimes His direction comes through open doors, closed doors, or conviction as we meditate on His Word. Whatever the means, His guidance is always rooted in His perfect wisdom and unfailing love.

When we choose direction over speed, we discover that God’s timing is never late, His path is never uncertain, and His purposes never fail.
