Who Is Jesus?

Who is Jesus? It is one of the most important questions anyone can ask. Our answer shapes what we believe about God, how we understand salvation and how we live as Christians.

Jesus is more than a good teacher, a prophet or an example of kindness. He is the Son of God, the Saviour of the world and Lord over all. Through Him, God has revealed Himself to us. In Jesus, we see God’s character, His love and His purpose for our salvation.

Jesus Christ: God Revealed to Us

Who Is Jesus

John 1:1 declares that the Word was with God and the Word was God. John 1:14 then tells us that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. These verses establish a central truth of Christianity: Jesus is truly God, who came into the world as a human being.

So, if Jesus is God, why is He called the Son of God?

The title does not mean Jesus was created or that He is less divine than the Father. It expresses His unique relationship with the Father. John 3:16 uses the phrase “His only begotten Son”, while John 1:18 speaks of the unique Son who makes the Father known. Jesus is eternally the Son; He did not become God’s Son at a point in time.

Why, then, did Jesus pray to the Father?

Because the Father and the Son are distinct persons. Jesus’ prayers reveal His relationship with the Father and His genuine human life. He came to do the Father’s will, demonstrating obedience and dependence rather than acting independently of Him.

What about the occasions when Jesus acknowledged limitations, such as not knowing the day or hour of His return (Mark 13:32)?

Jesus truly became human; He did not merely appear to be human. Christians have historically understood this in light of His divine and human natures. The passage should lead us to take both His full humanity and His divinity seriously, rather than dismissing either.

Through Christ, we see the full revelation of God’s character. His compassion reveals God’s mercy. His holiness reveals God’s purity. His sacrifice reveals the depth of God’s love.

Jesus is God’s expression of love towards humanity. Romans 5:8 tells us that God demonstrated His love for us through Christ’s death while we were still sinners.

Jesus Christ Is Lord

Who Is Jesus

To confess that Jesus Christ is Lord is to recognise His authority. He is not simply someone we admire; He is Master, and we are called to submit to Him.

If Jesus is Lord, then our choices, priorities, relationships and ambitions must come under His authority.

Consider what His lordship means:

  • He has authority: His Word guides our beliefs and decisions.
  • He is our Saviour: His finished work, not our good deeds, is the basis of our salvation.
  • He deserves our obedience: We cannot claim Him as Lord while deliberately refusing His direction.
  • He is worthy of worship: Our devotion belongs to Him, not merely when life is easy but in every season.

When we say, “Jesus is Lord”, we are making more than a statement of faith. We are acknowledging who has the right to lead our lives.

Though He existed in the form of God, He took the form of a servant and humbled Himself in obedience, even to death on a cross.

We can sing about Jesus, celebrate His miracles and speak confidently about His power. But do we reflect His character?

Following Jesus means learning to:

  • Serve rather than demand to be served.
  • Forgive rather than hold on to resentment.
  • Obey God even when obedience is costly.
  • Love others with sincerity and compassion.
  • Walk in humility rather than seek recognition.

We should worship Jesus, but we must also seek to emulate Him. Our lives should increasingly reflect the One we profess to follow.

And when we look to Jesus, we find more than an example. We find the Saviour who calls us to trust Him.

Our hope is not in our own effort, but in Christ.

Conclusion

Who is Jesus?

He is the Son of God, the full revelation of the Father, the One who died for our sins and the Lord who reigns over all.

His death has accomplished what we could never achieve by our own efforts. His resurrection gives us hope, and His lordship calls us to a life of faith, obedience and humility.

The question is no longer only whether we know who Jesus is. It is whether we have trusted Him as Saviour and surrendered to Him as Lord.

Do not only worship Jesus with your lips. Follow Him with your life.
